Caring for our community
Unilever Federal Credit Union recently provided grants to 20 local New Jersey small businesses and non-profits that have been affected by the current health crisis. Grants were in the amount of $10,000.00 each.
The New Jersey businesses receiving grants included restaurants, barbershops, day care centers, dry cleaners, beauty salons and animal shelters. The grants were provided to help business owners with meeting their financial obligations and to continue operating their businesses.
Funding for the grants was provided by the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, of which the credit union has been a long-time member. The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York was chartered in the 1930s by the United States Congress, and provides funding to credit unions and community banks in New Jersey and New York (as well as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands) so that these financial institutions can offer mortgage funding to their customers and members.
Each year, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York contributes 10% of their annual profit to promote affordable housing for low- and moderate-income citizens who live in the communities where the Bank serves. In addition to the funds provided for this small business grant program, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, most recently provided grants totaling over $45,000,000.00 for affordable housing initiatives. Affordable housing projects that most recently received grants include New Jersey housing projects in Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Paramus, South Orange, Ridgewood and Westwood.
Affordable housing projects in New York that received grants include projects located in Brooklyn, The Bronx, Nanuet, Rochester and Yonkers. You can learn more about the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York here: www.fhlbny.com
